Prolotherapy is also known as "Regenerative Injection Therapy" and involves the injection of "proliferants" into ligaments and tendons to help them heal back normally. Older proliferants included dextrose (sugar solution), phenol and sodium morrhuate (cod liver oil extract). Unlike cortisone for which repeat injections can weaken bony and ligament tissues, these proliferants stimulate a low grade inflammatory response with subsequent healing response. The latest technique involves the injection of a patient's own blood known as "Platelet Rich Plasma". Blood is centrifuged down so that concentrated platelets can be extracted out and then injected into the patient's low back, neck, shoulder, knee or other painful area. This will result in healing of chronically injured or weakened ligaments and improvement in function and strength.
